Chilean pop sensation Alex Anwandter chats with us on the heels of his latest album, El Diablo En El Cuerpo, a shimmering collection of punchy beats and infectious hooks. Alex answers some of our classic Edible Moments questions as well as the best way to listen to El Diablo and what comes next from the talented creative.
How do you hope people will listen to your new album? Is there a dream scenario you wish that it would soundtrack?
I’m not very anxious about that type of thing, though I do wish people would not listen to it out of their cellphone’s speakers! It’s a pretty horrible feeling when you spend months mixing an album and people hear it like that.
You're a talented producer, musician and even director — are there other things you'd like to try doing?
Why thank you! I actually am doing a new thing. I’ve been writing poetry for a few years and I’m publishing a book next year.
What do you miss most about Chile when you are in NYC, and what do you miss most about NYC when you are in Chile?
There’s a sort of consciousness that comes with growing up in a third-world country that I have come to deeply appreciate. The way people are so into luxury and money and climbing up this silly ladder they fixate on can feel very absurd. To me, at least. Also, people in South America are a usually more genuine and affectionate. When I’m in Chile I miss the way people in NYC really don’t care about other people think of them when they’re out in the street. You’ll see the craziest characters and everyone just goes about their business. That’s pretty great.
Which actress would play you in a movie about your life?
Patricia Clarkson, in my mind I feel no further explanation is necessary.
Favorite musicians right now?
Bill Evans. Gd genius.
Have you ever been arrested - tell us about it?
Yeah, crossing the border in El Paso, Texas. I was traveling in a van with people I didn’t know from Mexico into the US. Someone asked “does anybody have any drugs?”, we all said no. Turns out this girl was kind of a junkie and didn’t even remember she had drugs on her. Long story short, people are crying as I find myself handcuffed to a chair for 3 hours. The girl confessed and we all got released. Weird experience (acab).
What flavor would you be - and what flavor would you never be?
