Talented and tantalizing LA-based photographer, CHRIS BEHROOZIAN, turns the camera around on this sharp and well printed edition of Edible Moments. The charming artist, known for the excellently delivered Beefy Calendar, gets sweet and savory, pinning up answers to some of Buds’ greenest questions.

“I honestly don’t remember how the kiss was, I just remember how cool it was to actually be experiencing a kiss that was arousing.”

What inspires your take on the pinup calendar concept?

I started seeing more pinup or smut-type art and ‘zines and was really enjoying consuming them. I kind of use that as a guide of what I should make; things like Raw Meat Collective and Pinups by Christopher Schultz. I got this Bear Mag calendar from the 90s at Autoerotica in San Francisco and that became my guide to making the Beefy Calendar. I felt like I hadn’t seen a quality calendar like that, that was current. A lot of calendars I see are just really hot men who are popular online, who print a whole calendar of just themselves – which is great, but I wanted to make a semi-slutty calendar but shoot it on 4x5. I had just gotten a large format camera that I needed to practice on more.

What is your favorite album to get stoned to?

Anything by Beach House or SZA will always do me good.

Where do you find your subjects?

The first calendar, I photographed as many friends as I could, my boyfriend and a self portrait. Then, I offered to take a few photos for a friend who runs a party called CHUNK. He found a few guys in LA and I gave him those photos to use for event posters. Since then I mostly use Instagram or Twitter. I’m already overwhelmed by the amount of hot, hairy men I see scrolling on my phone, so I’ll occasionally reach out to some. I think I’ve photographed a few people I found on Growlr as well. Recently I’ve been going to more social events, taking pictures at IBC in Palm Springs and also the leather street festival Off Sunset in LA, just for fun. I ran into this gorgeous rugged man at the Eagle. He had that mutton chop facial hair and a cowboy hat and was wearing leather. I just asked if I could take a quick picture of him on a little point and shoot camera. He was super friendly so I decided to ask him about the calendar. That’s a recent example of finding a new subject. Sometimes past subjects send me people they know who they think would be good for the calendar too.

Where do you want to be in an hour?

The gym or the darkroom. Ideally post-gym, picking up a burrito on my way to the darkroom.

Who are some photographers that have inspired you?

Peter Hujar, Ian Lewandowski, Jim French, Mark McKnight, Pat McNabb, Stanley Stellar, Torbjorn Rodland, J. Bilhan, Alan Charlesworth, and many more.

Describe your first kiss?

I guess my first kiss was probably my high school girlfriend who basically asked me to kiss her because we had been dating for two weeks and I was too scared to kiss her. First time I kissed a man, I was 24. This married man who I had been talking to online made a “work trip” to come to visit me in the Bay Area. We met at the beach and went for a walk along the cliffs in Pacifica. Then we walked off the trail a bit and made out. I honestly don’t remember how the kiss was, I just remember how cool it was to actually be experiencing a kiss that was arousing.
