First-rate editor and deft culture writer, NOAH MICHELSON takes us on one of his signature stoned walks in this particularly glowing edition of Edible Moments. As usual, the discerning New Yorker keeps things stylish and inviting, revealing his guiltiest pleasures, favorite albums and details on his ultimate munchies weekend.
“He kissed me and then I put my hands on his chest and said in an incredibly dramatic voice, “I’d better go,” and ran back to my room.”
Where do you want to be in an hour?
On a walk. I moved to Brooklyn six years ago from Manhattan, where I’d been for 12 years, but I didn’t really get to know it until last year. There was nowhere to go because of the pandemic and I couldn’t stay cooped up in my apartment any longer, so I started taking these four or five hour walks and now I’m addicted to them. I make a playlist, I get stoned and I just walk. I’ve seen so many things I never knew existed here and it’s made me fall in love with Brooklyn in a really deep and beautiful way.
Boxers, briefs, or underwear is a construct?
Briefs in the streets, boxers in the sheets. I can’t handle all that fabric that boxers — and even boxer briefs — force me to contend with when I’m out and about. I hate the bunching. But when I’m hanging out at home, I’m usually in boxers and not much else.
Describe your first kiss?
My first kiss was when I was 18 and we went on a fairly uneventful date and then back to his dorm room. I was fresh out of the closet and though I’d hooked up with guys when I was younger, this was my first encounter that I didn’t have to keep a secret or feel dizzying shame about and I had no idea how to handle it. He kissed me and then I put my hands on his chest and said in an incredibly dramatic voice, “I’d better go,” and ran back to my room. I’m sure he thought I was a ridiculous frigid mess (and I was).
What is your favorite album to get stoned to?
Whenever a new album comes out, I wait until I can get stoned and go on a long walk to listen to it. I find the music hits harder that way and it ends up swimming into places in my head that it might not reach otherwise. I'm constantly searching for and listening to new music but a few all-time favorites when I’m stoned: Tori Amos’s “Boys For Pele,” Depeche Mode’s “Violator,” Kate Bush’s “Hounds Of Love,” Kylie Minogue’s “Aphrodite,” and Everything But The Girl’s “Walking Wounded."
